Stop Laying Eggs You Silly Bird

As promised here is a list of 10 things to try to keep your bird from laying eggs.

1.  Put your bird to bed early like 5 or 6 pm.  A long day length in one of the most important environmental cues triggering egg laying.  By allowing your bird to stay up late, you are mimicking the long days of spring and summer.  An early bedtime will help to turn off her breeding hormones.

2.  Keep your bird away from dark, enclosed spaces.  Most parrots are cavity nesters meaning that instead of building a nest in the open they look for dark, enclosed spaces to lay their eggs.

3.  Keep your bird away from others.  Having a mate is a strong stimulus for egg laying.  A mate could be a member of the opposite sex, another female or even a bird of a different species.

4.  Discourage breeding behavior.  Some birds will display breeding behavior like vent rubbing, tail lifting or regurgitating food.  Discourage these behaviors by putting your bird back in her cage for a time out whenever she displays them.  Don't pet your bird on her back or under her tail as this can be sexually stimulating.

5.  Remove your bird's love toys permanently.

6.  Rearrange the cage interior and location.  Your bird is less likely to lay eggs in an enviroment that keeps changing.

7.  Give your bird full spectrum light.  As egg laying can rob your pet of vitamins and calcium it is important that your bird have optimal nutrition and full spectrum sunlight is necessary for calcium metabolism.

8.  Avoid removing eggs that have already been laid.  If your bird is allowed to sit on those eggs for a while she may loose interest in laying more.

9.  Hormone injections.  Ask your veterinarian about these, they can vary from bird to bird but may be worth looking into.

10.  Consult your avian vet for more ideas.
