Interesting way to vaccinate......

This following story from WBZtv is really cool.  I wonder if they couldn't do something like that for dogs or cats who hate to go to the vet to be immunized.  It would be great if they could make little parvovirus or feline distemper vaccine treats for our pets.

"Thousands of doses of rabies vaccine are being dropped over northern New Hampshire and Vermont this week to try to immunize raccoons.

The 30,000 catsup-sized, fish-scented packets will be dropped over 210 square miles, mostly along the Connecticut River Valley in the far northern tip of the state. The packets also are being dropped over parts of Vermont and New York State.

Coordinator John McConnell said planes will begin flying as early as Tuesday out of Newport, Vt. Flights will be over four days, weather-permitting.

"These packets are coated with a fish meal polymer to attract the raccoons and once they eat the whole packet, the vaccine hits the tonsils and the raccoon is vaccinated," McConnell told the Union Leader.

The mission will require three to four flights a day, with planes flying about 500 feet above the ground."

The packets cost about $1 each and are being delivered by the United States Department of Agriculture.
