I just read this on the China View about how Chinese authorities have ordered all dogs to receive mandatory rabies vaccines. They are hoping that this will curb the number of human rabies cases. Between 2004 and 2006 more than 8400 people's lives were claimed by rabies which is around 30% of the total deaths from infectious diseases. Some studies have concluded that less than 10% of the number of dogs in China had any rabies vaccination which is a small number when you think that there are over 700,000 registered dogs in Bejing alone. I wonder if it is also mandatory in any other pets like cats? I am going to find this out and report it when I get the answer.
And if you don't think rabies is still around it is. In fact an alert was sent out in Toronto a couple of weeks ago when a border collie puppy was found to have rabies at a flea market there.
