Help Your Pets Beat The Heat This Summer

If you haven't noticed by the sound of your neighbors cutting grass or those globs of wax that used to be candles melting around your home, it's officially summertime. With temps in most parts of the country about to skyrocket to over 100 degrees in the shade, the ASCPA has come out with some tips pet owners should follow in order to protect our furry friends from the dangers of dehydration and overheating.

Fireworks Aren't For Pets- It's a no brainer, pets and fireworks don't mix. Fireworks often contain harzardous chemicals that could get inside your pet and of couse there's the risk of severly burning your animal by accident.

Don't Get Hot Under The Collar- It's the time of year for long walks in the park, strolls at sunset, and hanging out around the neighborhood with friends and family. With all this activity going on outside it's important to remember your pet may not be the only one wanting to use the local fire hydrant. As the temps rise so may the tempers of surrounding animals that want to claim a certain block as their own. Make sure you know where your animal is at all times and keep them away from strangers.

The Pool Is Not A Giant Waterdish-Just as tempting as the toilet bowl, from an animals point of view the swimming pool is one big fountain begging to be drank from. Before you let you pet take a dip in the family pool, think about all the chemicals you are using to keep it clean. Chlorine and other pool cleaners are extremely hazardous when ingested and it may be a good idea to keep Fido in a different area of your yard at all times.

Know When To Say When- We've all seen it happen. There's a big party going on, the fun is being had all around, then somebody gets the brillant idea to let Mrs. Kitty have a sip of alcohol. That little sip may seem insignificant but according to Dr. Steven Hansen with the ASPCA " alcoholic beverages can cause intoxication, depression, comas, or even death. Similarly, remember that the snacks you serve your friends should not be a treat for your pet; any change of diet, even for one meal, may give your dog or cat severe digestive ailments"

By keeping a look out for your pets while making sure you provide them with enough water and shade so they don't overheat, this summer is sure to be a time of great family fun for both you and your furry friends.
