Fireworks Safetly and Your Pets

For the entire country the 4th of July represents backyard cook outs, a day of lounging next the pool with friends and family, and a time when we all give thanks to those who have lost their lives for this freedom we hold so dear. As evident by the “here today-done tomorrow” stands that have recently sprung up on every street corner in the U.S., there’s not a better way to celebrate the holiday than with fireworks. Giant multi-colored bursts of light filling the sky, the sound of the Star Spangled Banner echoing across town, the OOHS and AAHS from thousands of wide eyed children (and adults too for that matter). The 4th of July is the main event when it comes to summertime fun, but unfortunately it may not be the most exciting time for our pets.

Imagine how you would react if suddenly without any advanced knowledge a sequence of loud explosions and thunder claps ignited all around you. For pets this is exactly what they experience every New Year’s and Independence Day. Before you break out the bottle rockets and sparklers this year, take a few safety precautions that will help your pet make it through unscathed.

  • If you have a pet that stays indoors, create a distraction. Turn up the volume on the radio or television.
  • Keep you outdoor pets on a leash and check on them periodically just to ensure their safety
  • Avoid shooting fireworks around or near where your pets are kept.
  • Clean up after the show. If swallowed fireworks could cause a serious health risk in pets, that’s why it’s important to pick up all the left over paper and sticks.

By being aware of your pet’s attitude and preparing yourself for their reaction to all the sites and sounds of July 4th, you can rest assured that this year’s fireworks show will be one everybody is sure to enjoy.
