5 Ways To Keep Ticks At Bay

Here in the backwoods of North Alabama where I’m at, ticks are a fairly common problem. Regardless of if you live in the city or along the back roads that stretch through the countryside, most of the summer is spent outside camping, hiking, or simply cutting grass. With all this time being spent outdoors it’s important for dog owners to remember that even just one tick bite could cause major health issues for man’s best friend.

Thankfully there are a few different ways to fight ticks and prevent disease in your pets. The first thing that you should do especially if you have an outside pet is to remember to do daily tick inspections. Ticks can live off an animal for weeks and by giving your pet a quick exam everyday you could very well be saving it’s life. Second do yourself a favor and pick up a couple boxes of Frontline Plus. According to Vetstop.com “When used every 2 weeks Frontline PLUS will help to control the paralysis tick. Frontline PLUS is presented in a pipette, which is applied to the skin on the back of neck of your dog. The active ingredient will migrate throughout the oil layer of the skin.”

If you prefer not to use Frontline then maybe a tick collar is the way to go. A few good brands include Preventic and Kiltix, but regardless of which brand you choose if you don’t want to put a chemical on them such as the type included in Frontline than definitely go with a tick collar.

Another way to rid and kill ticks that may land on your pup is to use a rinse such as Permonxin. Rinses are recommended for use every seven days and are simply applied then rinsed off. However if your pet is anything like mine it’s not exactly standing in line to take a bath. Last but not least, there’s always Proban. Proban is a form of tablet that if given every other day should keep those pesky ticks off of your pet. Again like the rinse though getting an animal to swallow a pill or take a bath can be a very frustrating task.

The most important thing to remember is that doing something is better than doing nothing. Regardless of if you choose a rinse, a tablet, a collar, or a few drops of Frontline just make sure you are doing something.
