Playing The Name Game

Anybody that’s ever gotten a new pet knows that one of them most difficult things you have to decide on (other than the whole “where to use the bathroom” issue) is what name to call him/her. The possibilities as to what to name your new pet are endless hence the pressure to pick the one that best fits its personality can be immense. The last thing you want to do is name your sleepy little puppy Droopy only to discover it can’t sit still or to discover that your fearless Tiger is scared of it’s own shadow. Most of us want our pets to have a name that is not only unique but also descriptive. While others are in love with the classics or prefer names more associated with pet owners instead of pets themselves.

No too long ago the American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) released a list of the Top 30 most popular pet names and some of the results may surprise you:

  • 1. Max
  •  2. Sam
  •  3. Lady
  •  4. Bear
  •  5. Smokey
  •  6. Shadow
  •  7. Kitty
  •  8. Molly
  •  9. Buddy
  • 10. Brandy
  • 11. Ginger
  • 12. Baby
  • 13. Misty
  • 14. Missy
  • 15. Pepper
  • 16. Jake
  • 17. Bandit
  • 18. Tiger
  • 19. Samantha
  • 20. Lucky
  • 21. Muffin
  • 22. Princess
  • 23. Maggie
  • 24. Charlie
  • 25. Sheba
  • 26. Rocky
  • 27. Patches
  • 28. Tigger
  • 29. Rusty
  • 30. Buster

As you can see the classics are well represented with the inclusion of names such as Tiger, Rusty, and Lucky.  You’ve also got a few of my favorites like Sam, Max, Jake, Buster. Then there are those that I’d never have guessed would be on the list. Who names there pet Maggie? I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a Samantha or Brandy. If I were at a park and heard somebody calling for either of those I’d think somebody had lost their kid not their cocker spaniel. Of course my personal favorite, which didn’t make the cut, will always be Sassy.

Do you have a favorite or unique pet name that didn’t make the list? If so share with the rest of us and we will mention it in a post.
