PETA Goes After Shamu

The People for The Ethical treatment of Animals otherwise known as PETA seem to be at it again. In the past their campaigns to stop what they consider to be the abuse of animals have included having supporters sit outside fast-food restaurants in cages while holding signs trying to stop people from eating meet and running commercials involving countless celebrities who are only famous for being famous. Now their latest target is the theme park Sea World and for the right price they just might make it their own.

Currently SeaWorld is owned by a Belgian beer maker called InBev through Anheuser-Busch and is looking to get out of the adventure park business once and for all. Though it’s thought that InBev is looking to sell all three SeaWorld parks as a package deal, PETA hopes that with the help of an unnamed donor the possibility may exist that they could purchase one of the parks for their own use and some of the animals may be set free. According to Treehugger.com, PETA plans to turn the park into an animal sanctuary and a virtual theme park. “PETA does not plan on closing the park, but instead would put the animals in marine sanctuaries; possibly set some free in the future, and setup a virtual reality theme-park at the current location.”

However while the theme parks won’t be up for sell for several months, InBev executives are letting it be known that they see the whole thing to be one giant publicity stunt by PETA all designed to grab the public spotlight for as long as it will shine on them. The Alaska Sealife Center evidently agrees saying “release is nearly impossible and that a marine sanctuary would still be hard on the animals, "because the animals would still need the care of humans." While the thought of PETA may seem far fetched to some, the organization definitely has its share of supports and a reputation for looking out for the best interests of animals that continues to grow with each passing campaign. One would have to think that as it attracts supporters, PETA will also one day have enough funds available to build a marine sanctuary similar to the one they reportedly have in mind for SeaWorld
