It was a story that captivated an entire world and placed the public spotlight on a sport that has never quite gotten the attention it deserves. Sure this year’s Olympics were supposed to be more about team spirit than individual achievement, but from all the talk about the much deserved success of Michael Phelps it’d be hard to prove otherwise. The Olympian stunned the world with his record setting 8 gold medals and now a pup named Jordan is proving that there’s room for one more record breaker in the world of swimming.
It all took place at the Dogs and Logs World Championship in Stillwater Minnesota where over 50 dogs from across the country all showed up to prove they were the best of their breed. With events such as Big Air, Extreme Vertical, and the all encompassing event entitled Dock Dogs Iron Dog, there was only one event that left tails wagging and that was Speed Retrieve. In Speed Retrieve pups are timed on how fast they can retrieve a duck and make it to the other end of a large pool. It was in this event that the chocolate lab named Jordan stunted all those in attendance by first breaking the world record with a time of 5.32 seconds and then again three days later doing it yet again with a time of 5.25 seconds.
Obviously Jordan’s owner Sean McCarthy of Carolville, Iowa was all grins as he told reporters “I didn’t expect it at. I was just hoping to make the finals, and she set the world record. And then in the finals she broke her own world record. I felt like Michael Phelps. When she broke that first world record, I was just so ecstatic. She jumped up in my arms and she was excited and going crazy. She doesn’t usually do that, so I am sure she fed off our excitement too. She certainly got a lot of treats, and a big bone, and a lot of hugs and misses from everyone.”
To make the story even that much more amazing Jordan has only been participating in swimming competitions for less than 9 months! In fact the duo of owner Sean and pup Jordan almost didn’t happen, “I wasn’t sure I wanted to get another dog because of the heartache that goes with them passing away, and the knowing you will outlive them. But after a month, I started to go a little stir crazy.” says Jordan. All it took was one glance from those puppy dog eyes and the rest as they say is history.
