How To Teach Your Pet To Be Alone

Unfortunately no matter how cute they are, at some point we must all leave our new pets home alone while we carry on with our daily lives. No doubt you have heard the horror stories of the pet owners who have come home to find their furniture trashed due to a bored pet looking for something to do. Just like learning how to roll over and sit, learning how to handle themselves while you are gone is something that doesn’t come naturally to an animal and must be taught.

The first thing you want to do is teach them that you will always come back. Don’t just sneak out of the house make sure they are aware you are leaving. Use the same words every time whether it be “See Ya” or “I’ll be back soon”. This will give your pet a clue as to what is about to take place. Do the same when you get back “Hey buddy!!” “I’m Home!” this way the animal doesn’t continue to feel abandoned and makes things easier the next time you leave.

Next make sure they have plenty to do. Lay out some balls, give them a chew toy, maybe a bone to spend the day chewing on. Don’t just shut the front door and expect them to entertain themselves, cause trust me they will and you won’t like it.

If you own a dog don’t forget to make sure it has gone to the bathroom. Before you jet out, make sure his potty needs are met and this should help you avoid any special presents left behind for you at the end of the day.

Last but not least, don’t leave sad. Animals can be very intuitive and know when you are down in the dumps about something. Make sure you give them a good belly rub and have a positive ring to your voice before you go.

Remember that being alone is something that is learned and not an instinct. With a little love and some extra attention on your way out the door, in no time you will notice the lack of destruction that comes with a lonely pet left in a house with nothing to do.
