So much happens overseas on a day-to-day basis that often the most heart-warming stories are buried between the headlines. Case in point for several weeks now one soldier stationed in Iraq has desperately been trying to bring back a pup she saved from certain death while serving in the country. At first the dog named Ratchet appeared to be stranded for good in the country, but thanks to a petition of signed by 50,000 supporters, a couple of congressman, a senator, and the international division of the SPCA it looks like Ratchet may just be on his way to his new home in America.
Ratchet was save by Sgt. Gwen Beberg who intended to have the pup accompany her as she transferred out of Iraq, but ran into a road block of sorts when a high ranking official confiscated Ratchet sighting the Army’s rule that prohibits stray animals. It wasn’t until the SPCA’s Operation Baghdad Pup (formed with the purpose of saving Iraqi dogs and cats which have been adopted by soldiers while overseas) stepped in and saved the day. According to a spokesperson from the SPCA “Ratchet's fate hangs by a thin thread of hope that he will be kept long enough for SPCA International's Operation Baghdad Pups team to return” The group plans on getting Ratchet on a outbound freight plane as early as this coming Sunday, something that has already been attempted once but failed when the military help the pup for unknown reasons. Stayed tuned to Scribbles N Bits for an update once Ratchet has made it home and is safe.
