Today was an historical day in our country's history. For many it just have been one of the most important events they will ever see. Today was a day when the spirit of freedom that fuels this country spoke to the world. A day of remembering what is most grand about living in these United States. A day for hopes and dreams. But for some it's also the end of a very large chapter in their lives.
You may have not caught this mornings issue of the Wall Street Journal, but in it buried beneath the headlines focusing on the incoming president elect lies a very touching article written by out going first daughters Jenna and Barbara Bush. Written as an open letter to Barack Obama's daughters Sasha and Malia, Jenna and Barbara shared some of their fondest memories of their timing living in and around the White House and gave a bit of advice on how to brave the life of a presidents daughter. Amoung their words of wisdom they wrote "Surround yourself with loyal friends. They'll protect and calm you and join in on some of the fun, and appreciate the history....If you're traveling with your parents over Halloween, don't let it stop you from doing what you would normally do. Dress up in some imaginative, elaborate costume (if you are like us a pack of Juicy Fruit and a Vampiress) and trick-or-treat down the plane aisle.....In fact, go to anything and everything you possibly can: the Kennedy Center for theater, State Dinners, Christmas parties (the White House staff party is our favorite!), museum openings, arrival ceremonies, and walks around the monuments. Just go. Four years goes by so fast, so absorb it all, enjoy it all."
One of the most touching pieces of advice and the reason I am sharing this with you here on a website devoted to pets, is a very touching sentiment about the importantance of having a furry friend to turn to. "A note on White House puppies--our sweet puppy Spot was nursed on the lawn of the White House. And then of course, there's Barney, who most recently bit a reporter. Cherish your animals because sometimes you'll need the quiet comfort that only animals can provide."
After reading this I can't help but wonder if this doesn't hold true for all of us who own pets. Life is never easy and not always fair, but those of us who consider a pet as a member of our family as much loved as grandma and grandpa those quiet moments of comfort with our animals are often all we need to pick ourselves up and carry on. If you are thinking about owning a pet or simply want a friend who will be loyal to the very end, there's an animal shelter near you full of pets that desperately wants your love and attention. All it takes is the ability to care.
